Funds collected in an auction will be donated to the Red Cross
NEW YORK (Tuesday, March 15, 2011) MLS WORKS, the Community aid initiative of Major League Soccer today announced a national campaign for the League to support the relief efforts of American and Canadian Red Cross after the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last week.
"On behalf of Major League Soccer and all our clubs, I would like to express our deepest sympathy and extend our thoughts and prayers to all those affected by the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "The MLS has the pleasure of working with the Red Cross to provide the family with the MLS opportunity to make a donation to the needy."
Major League Soccer and its clubs will be raising awareness, raising funds and encouraging fans to support the Red Cross and its efforts, when the MLS season begins today with his 16th MLS First Kick presented by Dick's Sporting Goods.
Donations can be made in the United States by sending a text message with the word RedCross to 90999 or donate online at RedCross.org Canada or sending a text message with the word ASIA to 30333 or donate online at RedCross.ca .
MLS fans will also have the opportunity to bid on autographed items www.MLSsoccer.com / works . Proceeds from the auction Internet will be donated to the relief effort of the Red Cross.
The 2011 season of the MLS will start tomorrow when the LA Galaxy travel to face the Seattle Sounders FC at 9:30 pm ET (ESPN Deportes, ESPN, ESPN3.com, ESPN Deportes Radio.)
